Some stucco cracks are cosmetic and some mean water has been getting into your wall for a while. The shape of the crack, and one simple test you can do yourself, tell you which one you have before anyone quotes you.
The pattern tells you the severity. Fine, evenly spread map cracking is usually shrinkage in the finish coat and is largely cosmetic. Diagonal cracks running off window and door corners, long horizontal cracks, any crack you can catch a fingernail in, and any crack with staining below it are different — those are letting water into the assembly. Then tap the wall: if it sounds hollow and drummy around the crack, the stucco has debonded from the wall behind and filling the crack will not hold. Cracking is the symptom; bond and water are the actual questions.
Not all stucco cracks mean the same thing, and the shape tells you most of what you need to know. Before anyone quotes you, walk the wall and work out which of these you have — it is the difference between a cosmetic repair and a wall that is taking on water.
The corner cracks matter more than their size suggests. A window opening concentrates stress at its corners, so that is where a wall gives first — and it is also the one place where a crack sits directly over the join between the cladding and the window, which is the least forgiving detail on the whole elevation.
Cracking tells you the surface has moved. It does not tell you whether the stucco is still stuck to the wall — and that is the question that decides what the repair actually is.
Tap along the wall with a knuckle or the handle of a screwdriver, every foot or so, working outward from the cracked area. Solid stucco gives a sharp, dense tap. Debonded stucco sounds dull and drummy — hollow. Chalk the hollow spots and step back. If the hollow area extends well past the visible cracking, the crack was a symptom, not the problem: the stucco has released from the wall behind it and no amount of filling the crack will hold.
This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can do before getting quotes, and it costs nothing. It also tells you very quickly whether the contractor in front of you is being straight with you — anyone quoting a crack fill on a wall that sounds hollow across half an elevation is quoting the cheap version of a job that will fail.
Stucco and EIFS are not waterproof membranes; they are the outer face of an assembly that is supposed to shed water and let anything that gets past drain back out. Cracks matter because of where the water goes next, not because of how they look.
Interior signs on the same wall as exterior cracking is the combination worth acting on quickly. By then the question is no longer the finish; it is what the water has been doing to the sheathing and framing behind it.
Almost everyone tries caulk or a filler first, and on genuinely cosmetic hairlines that can be reasonable. It fails on structural cracks for three reasons worth understanding before you pay for it twice.
Ontario winters are unusually hard on this. Water gets into a crack, freezes, expands, and levers the crack wider — then the cycle repeats, often dozens of times in a season. A crack left through one winter is generally not the same crack in spring.
A written scope should say what happens at each stage, not just "repair stucco". These are the steps that decide whether the repair lasts.
Tap the whole elevation, mark the hollow areas, and cut the material back to where it is genuinely bonded. This step decides the outcome and it is the step that gets skipped.
Structural cracks are cut out to a proper profile so the repair material has a key to grip, rather than being skimmed over.
Fibreglass mesh embedded in the base coat and carried well past the crack on both sides — that overlap is what stops the crack reappearing along the old line.
Flashing, sealant joints and the window and door perimeters get addressed at the same time. Repairing the field while leaving the interruption open just moves the problem.
Finish coat worked to match the existing texture and colour as closely as the material allows, carried to a natural break in the elevation rather than stopped in the middle of a wall.
A repair patch in the middle of a weathered wall will show, however well it is troweled — existing stucco has years of UV and dirt on it that new material does not. Good repairs are carried to a corner, a joint or a change of plane so the eye reads a whole surface rather than a patch. Ask where the repair will stop before you agree to it.

Fine hairline cracking is common and is often shrinkage in the finish coat rather than a fault in the wall. It matters when it changes character: when a crack opens wide enough to catch a fingernail, when it runs diagonally off a window or door corner, when staining appears below it, or when the stucco around it sounds hollow. Those are no longer cosmetic, because they put water into the assembly behind the finish.
On a genuinely cosmetic hairline, a flexible filler can buy time. On a crack running off a window corner it will reopen, usually within a season, because the movement causing it has not been addressed and filler adds no reinforcement. What controls cracking in stucco and EIFS is fibreglass mesh embedded through the base coat and carried past the crack on both sides.
EIFS has a layer of rigid insulation board behind the finish, so it sounds and feels different from traditional cement stucco applied straight onto the wall - EIFS gives a softer, lighter sound when tapped, and window returns are usually thicker. They repair differently, so it matters. A contractor who cannot tell you which you have should not be cutting into it.
Usually not. Most stucco cracking is finish and substrate movement, thermal cycling, or a bond failure - not structural settlement. Cracking that does suggest structural movement tends to run through several materials at once, continue on the inside of the house, and come with doors or windows that have started binding. If that is what you are seeing, the right first call is a structural engineer, not a finishing contractor.
Cementitious materials have minimum application temperatures and need protection from freezing while they cure, which makes the shoulder seasons and summer the practical window in the GTA. If a crack is actively letting water in during winter, a temporary measure to keep water out until conditions allow a proper repair is usually the sensible call - work forced through in the cold without protection is a common cause of early failure.
