Muskoka is the one place we work where the calendar, not the scope, runs the project. Cottages and year-round homes on Lake Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph sit on Canadian Shield granite, take a harder winter than anywhere in the GTA, and are frequently empty for months at a stretch. Every one of those facts changes how the work has to be planned.
Cementitious base coats, stucco finishes and exterior paint all need temperatures to hold above roughly 5°C while they cure — not just at noon, but overnight. Muskoka loses that window earlier in the autumn and gets it back later in the spring than Toronto does, and a cold night on fresh material does damage that no amount of care the next day undoes.
So the honest answer on a late-season Muskoka exterior is sometimes that it should wait for spring. We would rather tell you that at the site visit than take a deposit and gamble your wall on an October cold snap. Interior work — drywall, paint, tile — carries no such limit and is often the better use of the shoulder season.
Deeper frost, heavier snow load and a wider annual temperature swing mean Muskoka exteriors age faster than their GTA equivalents, and foundations on rock move differently to foundations on Toronto clay. Hairline cracking that would be routine down south is worth a closer look up here, because on Shield terrain it is more often telling you something about movement than about the coating. A finish coat can hide a crack for a season; it cannot fix what is causing it.
Where the substrate is genuinely sound, the sequence is the one we document publicly — strip the failed material back, rebuild with a mesh-reinforced base coat, finish over top. Materials are Durabond and Sto. Where it is not sound, you need to know that before anyone quotes a finish.
A cottage nobody is living in is the easiest building in the world to work on — no working around a family, no daily reset, no noise limits. If your property is seasonal, say so early and the schedule can be built around the months you are not there. Two things worth flagging when you first call: whether the access is road or water, and whether the place is winterised. Both change the plan more than the scope does.
