Every Interior Surface
of a New School
FAIME Construction Inc. was the painting subcontractor for the complete interior painting of St. André Bessette Catholic School, a new two-storey school in Innisfil, Ontario, between June and August 2024. The scope covered the classrooms, corridors, offices, gymnasium, auditorium and service rooms, including walls, ceilings, doors, trim and baseboards. Every surface was primed, then finished in flat acrylic on walls and ceilings and semi-gloss enamel on doors, trim and high-traffic surfaces, using low-VOC products. The work was completed on schedule, within budget and with zero safety incidents.Institutional & new-build painting · GTA, Simcoe County & beyond · 15+ years' trade experience · WSIB Active · $2M CGL · 2-year workmanship warranty
Project Overview
St. André Bessette Catholic School is a newly built two-storey school in Innisfil, in Simcoe County. On a new institutional build, painting is one of the final finishing trades. It has to be completed to the architect's finish schedule, in step with the other trades, and to a standard that will hold up to years of daily use by students and staff.
FAIME Construction was engaged as the painting subcontractor for the school's entire interior. The work ran from June to August 2024 with a crew of up to five painters, and painting was the only trade on FAIME's scope.
Coordination on a New Build
Before work began, FAIME reviewed the specifications and finish schedules with the general contractor. The painting was then phased classroom by classroom and floor by floor to meet the project's construction milestones. On a new build, painters share the floors with flooring, millwork, ceiling and fixture crews, so the sequence matters as much as the paint. FAIME worked to that sequence, protected completed areas, and kept each space clean for the trades that followed.
Preparation & Protection
New drywall is not ready for paint simply because it has been taped. Before priming, the drywall was sanded, joints were filled and surface imperfections were repaired, and every surface was cleaned for proper adhesion. Flooring, windows, fixtures and equipment were protected and masked, and unpainted surfaces were kept clean throughout.
Primer & Finish Coats
All interior surfaces received a drywall primer-sealer, which evens out the absorption between paper face and joint compound so that the finish dries to a uniform colour and sheen. Finish coats followed, two to three depending on the substrate and colour.
Sheen was specified by use. Classroom walls, standard wall areas and ceilings were finished in flat acrylic, which hides minor surface variation under bright classroom lighting. Doors, frames, trim and high-traffic, washable surfaces were finished in semi-gloss enamel, which stands up to repeated cleaning. Low-VOC products were used throughout, supporting good indoor air quality in a building that students and staff would occupy soon after the work was completed.
Gymnasium & Auditorium
The gymnasium and auditorium are the largest continuous surfaces in a school and the most visible. FAIME applied durable, easy-to-clean finishes with good light reflectivity, and paid particular attention to an even tone and seamless coverage across the large wall and ceiling areas, where any lap mark or colour variation is immediately obvious.
Final Inspection & Handover
Every area was inspected and touched up before turnover, and a final walk-through was completed with the general contractor to confirm that the school met the required standard. The work was completed on schedule, within budget and with zero safety incidents.
